IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE RESULTS, CHANGE YOUR THINKING
Feb 09, 2023Earlier today I met with my coach (Yes - even coaches have a coach). I asked her to coach me through an “Ah Ha” moment in my thinking that stopped me in my tracks yesterday and kept me awake much of the night. It has been such a powerful reflection opportunity for me that I thought I would share my experience with you in the event you might find value in it.
So yesterday I was deep diving into the concept of mindset and specifically the science behind how one’s own success starts with one’s own thinking. I was reading an excerpt from Michael Hyatt’s latest book, Mind Your Mindset, and was so strongly impacted by a question his personal coach (Yes - even the most successful have coaches) posed to him as he was sharing all the reasons why he believed he and his team did not meet their success goals/targets recently.
The question she asked him that resulted in him being taken aback somewhat AND caused me to pause and immediately reflect on a personal area of business success that I feel “stuck” in right now was this…
“What is it about your leadership that led to this outcome?”
WOW! Just WOW! That hit me hard.
Hyatt’s coach added, “As long as the problem is ‘out there’ (meaning all the external reasons that caused the outcome to occur as it did), you can’t fix it. You are just a victim.”
Now, she was not trying to blame or shame Hyatt. She was actually trying to empower him.
She went on to say, “You can’t change your results until you accept 100% full responsibility for them as the leader. The story you are telling yourself about reality has created a fixed horizon of possible responses [outcomes]. Yes we have problems “out there” but how we choose to respond to them is entirely “in here” (in our own heads).”
That right there stopped me in my tracks.
If I don’t like the results I’m getting, I have to change my thinking about them…which then impacts how I feel about them…which then changes my action(s) toward them…which ultimately changes the results.
How I lead directly impacts…everything.
How I choose to lead has absolutely nothing to do with eternal forces, problems, challenges, etc. How I lead is 100% my choice.
If I don’t like the results, it’s on me.
If you have a challenge you’re facing or perhaps you’re not seeing the results or outcomes you desire, take a moment to sit back and ask yourself, “What is it about my leadership that led to this outcome?”
Be prepared for a potentially deep and thought provoking conversation with yourself.
